Class Day

What to bring & how to prepare

Show up with the right gear and the day goes smoothly. Print this page or pull it up the night before class.

Required gear

  • Handgun, .22 caliber or larger, in working order
  • 50 rounds of factory ammunition (no reloads)
  • Holster or a case to transport your handgun
  • Eye protection (wraparound preferred)
  • Ear protection (muffs or plugs)
  • Magazines — at least two if you have them

Documents

  • Valid Texas driver license or state ID
  • Payment confirmation or receipt
  • Proof of residency if your ID address is outdated
  • Military DD-214 if applying under the 18+ service rule
  • A pen and something to take notes with

Comfort & dress

  • Closed-toe shoes — required on the range
  • High-neck shirt (no scoop or V-neck) to stop hot brass
  • Ball cap with a brim
  • Water and a snack; class runs about four hours
  • Weather-appropriate layers — the range is outdoors

You can use mine

You may qualify with my handgun, and I keep loaner eye and ear protection on hand. Just tell me on your registration form so I bring enough for everyone. Range fee and gun rental are not included in tuition, and you still need 50 rounds of ammunition to qualify.

How class day runs

01

Check-in

Arrive 15 minutes early with your ID. We verify eligibility and hand out materials.

Classroom

About four hours covering the four state-required modules, with live Q&A throughout.

Written exam

The state-approved written test. Everything on it is covered in class — nobody is surprised.

Range qualification

50-round DPS proficiency course of fire at 3, 7, and 15 yards, scored and reviewed with you.

Leave these at home

  • Loaded firearms — arrive with your handgun unloaded and cased
  • Reloaded, steel-core, or tracer ammunition
  • Alcohol or anything impairing — you will be sent home
  • Open-toe shoes, sandals, or low-cut shirts
  • Firearms in unsafe condition or with known malfunctions
  • Guests who are not registered for the class
